Brenden directed Sra-eel to fly directly toward the hunt. He hoped his plan worked. While the gryphon powered through the air, he readied his attack, charging the rounded green-grey pebbles with power. They reached the hunt moments after Brenden finished.

Sra-eel pointed his beak at the ground, folded his wings and turned forward flight into a steep downward dive. His speed and momentum built at a frightful rate, but Brenden was focused on the hunt.

Right before he placed the first stone in the sling, he noticed the horses the hunters were mounted on. Arabian horses, Greek horses, Scandinavian horses…all the stolen magical horses appeared to be here. But he didn’t have the leisure to do a more thorough inspection.

With a wordless command, he ordered Sra-eel to break off the attack. The gryphon opened his wings, braking their fall in a spectacular, obvious display. The hunt had seen them; they had to have. Just to make certain that they had the hunt’s full attention, Brenden cast his stones as rapidly as he could, his sling whirring in the air.

The first stone hit the ground in front of the lead riders and exploded, spraying the hunt with magical darts. The rest of the stones did the same, and Sra-eel turned to the left and strained for altitude as soon as the twelfth and final stone was away. Brenden fed the gryphon power to aid its climb. Altitude for speed, according to the old adage. Diving, one gained speed. Climbing, one lost speed. Brenden did what he could to mitigate the loss of forward momentum.

Once they steadied in level flight at right angles to their original course, Brenden glanced back. And cursed. The hunt had ignored him. They weren’t turning. They continued to pursue his family. Pursing his lips, he ordered Sra-eel to turn. He outlined a new plan and sensed the gryphon’s agreement.

They flew ahead of the hunt then turned in a shallow dive, cutting between the fleeing prey and the wild hunt pursuing them. Brenden cast fire upon the grass and trees, forming a physical barrier that even magical horses would be loathe to cross.

Sra-eel found a mountain ledge to rest on, which gave them a good view of the barricade.

Brenden smiled when the hunt reached the raging fire and was forced to turn aside. He would continue to watch for a time to see what the hunt did next.
